Hello! My name is Vanessa Newton, and I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and have been in the field of Social Work for over 10 years now. As of lately, most of my work has been with women who are facing difficult life transitions and experiencing feelings of shame, low self-worth and loss of identity. It's been described to me as feeling trapped in one's own body. In addition to providing therapy services, I am also the Owner and Founder of Colors of Austin Counseling, Brave and Well, a consulting business designed to empower mental health professionals with the tools and resources they need to build thriving private practices, and SocialNote, a web-based platform designed for school based mental health professionals to securely document their interactions with students and families.

Before private practice, most of my career was focused on working with children and adolescents alongside their families. I moved from a high-paced acute medical setting to a crisis-focused school setting. Both experiences were extremely rewarding and taught me a lot about what it takes to work with youth within family systems.

I was previously employed as a School Social Worker at KIPP Austin Collegiate High School and a Medical Social Worker at Dell Children's Medical Center and Children's Memorial Hermann in Houston, TX working in the Pediatric ICU with children and families dealing with chronic illnesses. I have experience working with grief and loss, depression, trauma, anxiety, relationship issues, career-focused counseling, psychiatric crises, parent support and adolescent issues.

The services I provide are highly relational, honest and real. My clients learn to sit in the dark in order to be able to see the light. My work is based on The Daring Way™ curriculum written by Brené Brown, and I am a Certified Daring Way Facilitator. I have a passion for working with adults, especially entrepreneurs and millennials, adolescents and women of color. The work I do with clients has helped me navigate some of the darkest times in my life, which is why I am devoted to sharing it with the world.

By working with me, you will be able to identify those things that are keeping you from showing up and letting yourself be seen every single day. You will discover how to live an authentic, wholehearted life and believe that you are worthy of love and belonging.

Favorite self-care tip

To practice stillness. There’s a lot that can be discovered when we take the time to slow down and listen. I find sitting outside in the grass, staring into the sky with my eyes closed is my favorite way to do this even if for 5 minutes.

Favorite quote or affirmation

“Stop asking people for directions to places they’ve never been.” - Glennon Doyle Melton

I feel most calm & content when

My phone is nowhere to be found, and I’m engaging in play on the floor or in nature with my family.

I love learning about

People, why we are the way we are, the world around us and connecting and practicing joy can make us better people.
