Couples Therapy

As humans, it is our nature to seek out feelings of connection so we feel seen and heard by one another. The narratives we receive from our childhood, or relational experiences, can shape our worldview, which then affects how we show up in adult relationships.

When we experience conflict within our relationships, it can stir up those deep emotional insecurities and past experiences, causing us to feel disconnected from each other. Couples Therapy aims to help you and your partner create awareness of the cycles you are in when in conflict, reconnect and feel secure and learn to communicate more mindfully.

Couples Therapy may be most helpful for:

  • Couples about to enter a life transition (marriage, expecting a baby, moving in together, etc.)
  • Couples finding it difficult to communicate and/or feel connected
  • Couples navigating infidelity and/or intimacy issues
  • Couples in multicultural relationships
  • Couples trying to decide if they want to separate
  • Couples curious in exploring their attachment styles

How It Works

Couples sessions are 50-55 minutes in length. You will be in session together with your therapist, though there could be occasional times where your therapist might want to meet 1-on-1. In couples therapy, you can expect to be sharing information about how your relationship started, family narratives and beliefs that you hold, past and current experiences, conflict cycles and emotions that arise throughout your relationship. There is not a “deadline” for when to end couples therapy – you and your couples therapist will discuss when you will know you are ready to conclude your sessions.

Please know: your couples therapist is not there to choose sides or say who is right or wrong - they are simply working to support and guide you through the process of listening to each other, validating your experiences, identifying triggers and meeting each other where you currently are.

Some of the areas we focus on in relationship/couples counseling are:

  • Identifying individual wants and needs
  • Developing effective and authentic communication skills
  • Navigating through infidelity
  • Challenges with intimacy/sex
  • Tackling anger and resentment
  • Managing life/relationship transitions

Empowering individuals on their healing journeys.

We created Colors of Austin Counseling to be a group of like-minded BIPOC practitioners serving the community of individuals with identities and backgrounds similar to our own. Being fully understood and seen on your healing journey is of the utmost importance, yet it can be difficult for BIPOC individuals to find trusted therapists in their community. Our diverse and experienced team exists to fill that void and provide individuals with a wide range of methods and practitioners to choose from based on their unique needs and mental health goals.
