Teens & Young Adults

Psychotherapy (sometimes called talk therapy or therapy) refers to a variety of treatments that aim to help teens and young adults that struggle identifying and navigating troubling emotions, negative thoughts and unhealthy behaviors/habits that impact their daily life and relationships with others.

It is important to remember challenges vary from one unique individual to another and not one therapy experience is the same. Therapy typically takes place when a licensed therapist and an individual meet one-on-one or with other participants in a group setting.

Teens and Young Adults therapy is appropriate for teens between ages 13-17 and young adults between ages 18-23. Our ideal teen client is constantly pushing boundaries in and out of school. They don't know who they are yet and are constantly taking risks to figure it out. Their parents "don't know what to do with them," but all parties involved are willing to try to figure it out. They're complex, brave and tender. They long to fit in, take risks and enjoy the process of learning from their mistakes. They aren't afraid to do the hard things and aren't too tough to cry it out.

Some potential benefits of teen therapy may include:

  • Altering harmful or limiting thoughts patterns
  • Decreasing symptoms of anxiety and/or depression
  • Setting personal goals and identifying methods to obtain goals
  • Increasing emotional intelligence/awareness
  • Improving effective communication
  • Increasing self-acceptance/self esteem
  • Changing self-sabotaging behaviors and habits
  • Creating personalized healthing habits/strategies for emotion regulation/management
  • Creating and upholding boundaries and learning to respect boundaries of others
  • Providing an appropriate, safe and trusting space/resource outside of family and friends

How It Works

Therapy is offered in 50-55 minute sessions that can take place in an office, virtually or in outside spaces (known as ecotherapy) that support privacy and confidentiality. We often use talk therapy combined with mindfulness and creativity so that teens can be solutions-focused and learn how to navigate the different situations that they are facing. Therapy can include but is not limited to the use of music, art, stretches, breathing exercises, coloring books, puzzles or fidgets to reduce anxiety and provide comfort.

Therapy is not a linear process and requires patience and grace from individuals as well as their support networks. It is meant to challenge the person by restructuring their thought process and behaviors often created from learned experiences or developed as a result of trauma, while in crises or survival mode. Therapy provides support and education, encourages vulnerability, upholds accountability and boundaries and most importantly is a process that takes time.

Some of the topics we specialize in are:

  • Issues related to self-worth and shame
  • Grief and loss
  • Self-esteem issues
  • Social peer pressures
  • Depression and anxiety
  • Self-harming behaviors
  • Trauma
  • Bullying
