EMDR therapy does not require talking in detail about the distressing issue or completing homework between sessions. EMDR instead focuses on altering the emotions, thoughts or behaviors that result from a distressing event(s). This allows your brain to resume a natural healing process. Therapy involves attention to three time periods: the past, present, and future. Focus is given to past disturbing memories and related events as well as current situations that cause distress and to developing the skills and attitudes needed for positive future actions.
EMDR is a short-term treatment model that can heal traumas in as little as 1-3 sessions. While it is powerful and often very effective, it is not magic. Instead, it is an 8-phased treatment model that is tailored to your needs. It may take many months or even years to complete. This will depend on if you are suffering from complex trauma or other complicated issues. For many, EMDR therapy can be completed in fewer sessions than other psychotherapies.
