Beyond Self-Disclosure: Power, Culture, and Ethics in the Digital Age

A 60-minute virtual workshop for therapists on the ethics of being visible online, seen through a liberation-oriented lens and centering therapists of color. Friday, December 11 · 12:00–1:00 PM CT · Google Meet · 20 seats.

What is the Beyond Self-Disclosure workshop?

Beyond Self-Disclosure is a 60-minute live workshop on Google Meet for therapists who want to think more deeply about the ethics of social media. Led by Roy Mong, LPC-Associate, at Colors of Austin Counseling, it goes past the usual rules on self-disclosure and confidentiality to look at power, culture and the attention economy. It's $49 if you register by November 20 and $69 after, with 20 seats.

Why this workshop exists

Most social media ethics training for therapists stops at self-disclosure, dual relationships and confidentiality, and it's often taught from a place of fear. But social media isn't going away. For clinicians with marginalized identities, it can open doors to partnerships, visibility and income that make this work more sustainable. And in a predominantly white field, much of what therapists of color navigate online rarely makes it into the conversation.

The conversation

What questions will we explore?

We'll look at the ethical responsibilities that come up when clinical knowledge meets a public platform: cultural appropriation, extraction of lived experience, unsolicited clinical interpretation, parasocial relationships, algorithmic incentives and the commodification of healing. Four questions guide the hour.

Question 1

Power

What power does my professional identity give me here?

Question 2

Culture

Whose experience is being centered? Who is being seen, and who might be put at risk?

Question 3

Agency

Does my work increase people's capacity to understand and act for themselves?

Question 4

Attention

Am I accumulating attention and authority, or using my platform to redistribute them?

You won't leave with a rulebook. You'll leave with clearer questions to bring to your own practice and your own platform.

Is this for me?
