Workshop Overview

Since 2015, the United States has seen a rapid rise of fear, material and emotional insecurity, abusive policies, and authoritarian tactics at all levels of society. These elements have undoubtedly had their fair share of mental, emotional, and somatic impacts on the professionals who accompany the most marginalized in various capacities. This professional and personal development opportunity aims to characterize the collective and personal experience of living in oppression, authoritarianism, and chronic chaos, and provide resources and tools of how to sustain through it as mental health providers and human beings. 

Workshop Objectives

  • Basic understanding of the elements of authoritarianism and  political abuse.
  • Familiarize yourself with the somatic and mental health impacts of authoritarianism and political abuse.
  • Understand how to identify and recognize the disconnections between abusive policies and practice. 
  • Opportunity to hold space for grief, rage, and hope during these 
  • Gain skills in how to sustain the mind and body through these disconnections, particularly through Hopeful and Conscious Discipline practices.

About the Presenter 

Lina Guerrero is a Licensed Master Social Worker and a Licensed Chemical Dependency Counselor Intern that is passionate about the intersections of healing and health within the traumatic systems in which we all live. She has extensive experience within various violence intervention, harm reduction, criminal justice, health, and government spaces, and is committed to embodied practice and care within these spaces. In her free time, she loves swimming, bachata dancing, and snuggling with her senior chihuahua, Gonzalo.
