Show notes

Lina Guerrero and Claudia Hernandez Vargas get personal about the losses that changed their lives. Lina talks about her Tía Mari, the “cool tía,” who died of breast cancer in in-home hospice when Lina was 17. Claudia talks about her dad, who lived with kidney disease for years before COVID took him in August 2021, the same month she finished grad school.

They talk about anticipatory grief, the strange relief hospice can bring, and why anger is so often sadness underneath. They also get into what grieving kids and teens actually need from the adults around them, and why grief shows up in so much more than death. It’s an honest, unpolished conversation about grief in Latinx families and about missing the people who raised us.

Content note: This episode includes in-depth discussion of death and dying, terminal illness, hospice and end-of-life care, and chronic illness, along with strong language throughout. Please take care of yourself while listening.
