What is individual therapy like at Colors of Austin Counseling?

We all have periods of times in our lives where we experience struggle. The intensely painful feeling that we are unworthy of love and belonging and the constant comparison between ourselves and others can make navigating life difficult. We all need someone who will listen, validate and be a part of our many emotions depending on what's happening in our lives at this very moment. It is my belief that we are all capable of cultivating our best selves when we take the time to dig deep into what it is that is keeping us from authenticity.

Asking for help takes a lot of courage. Our approach with clients begins in a safe environment free of judgement and comparison. Feeling safe is essential to being able to tell your story so that you are able to move through the challenges that brought you here.

What would your life look like if you leaned into the discomfort you felt on the inside? Could you imagine a world where you got a little curious about all those negative thoughts and maybe even that knot in your stomach that happens every time you step into a difficult conversation, work meeting or social gathering?

What needs to happen for you to get to the place you want to be in your life? What if you let go of who you are “supposed to be” and instead CELEBRATE  who you are?!

A large part of our work with clients is based on the shame resilience research of Brene Brown. Our goal is to give you the tools you need to meet your treatment goals, foster shame resiliency and practice self-compassion in order to live a wholehearted life.

How do you know if we're a good fit?

You read all the books. You take all the self-help classes. You practice all the yoga. You even do those funky deep breathing “exercises” called meditation. But, surprise! It doesn’t work. Those anxious thoughts keep swirling through your brain and no matter how many positive affirmations you tell yourself, you still feel like an imposter.

I work with adults who:

  • are high functioning adults facing relentless pressure

  • suffer from "imposter syndrome" and are exhausted from hustling for perfectionism

  • identify as persons of color and come from diverse backgrounds

  • are going through difficult life transitions

  • want support in owning their truth, no matter how messy it is

  • are experiencing struggles related to low self-worth and shame

  • are struggling with anxiety or depression

  • are experiencing relationship difficulties

  • are experiencing grief and loss

  • are creative entrepreneurs seeking to feel empowered to launch their next business idea or product

  • are self-identified millennials who want better clarity on their life journey

What happens during session?

Each individual session lasts 50 minutes.

What happens in each session depends on what you're needing. No session is the same. However, at Colors of Austin Counseling we believe in finding creative solutions to your problems. You will be invited to express yourself in a way you haven't done before. You will likely test your limits.

You may be asked to create something that speaks to you and that will allow you to explore joy and what that means to you. Sometimes, you will be asked to some "homework" outside of sessions in order to continue the work on your own time and "get it in your bones." We believe that therapy involves work and it involves practice, both in and out of our sessions together.

Our office is packed full of art supplies, books, paper, pillows, games, blankets, play-doh and the list goes on. We want you to feel safe and we know that sometimes trying something new like counseling can be scary. You will be invited to grab what you need while you're here. This is your space.
